Love Lemongrass?

May 9, 2018

Lemongrass is one of my favorite essential oils. It is refreshing and relaxing to the senses and reminds me of a cool summer morning. As a candlemaker, it’s one of my go to scents as I know that it will be a hit with most people. It’s one of my best sellers. I’m even trying to grow some lemongrass of my own in the garden this year. We will see how that turns out! A little about Lemongrass essential oil.

Having its beginnings in Southeast Asia, Lemongrass is an herb that belongs to the grass family Poaceae. The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation. It has a light, fresh, lemony smell with earthy undertones and is stimulating and relaxing at the same time. With its subtle citrus-herb scent, Lemongrass essential oil offers a soothing aroma that creates a sense of clarity.

I don't know about you but my sense of smell can effect my emotions and my day, especially if the scent is one that reminds me of life events. The smell of Thanksgiving dinner cooking is one of them but we won't go into that now! The aroma of Lemongrass essential oil is wonderful and can help boost self-esteem, confidence, and hope, as well as uplift the spirit and fight depression. It can also help relieve anxiety and help improve the quality of sleep (and who can argue with that).

If you love lemongrass essential oil the way I do, you can make a home fragrance with it, a natural air freshener. Add the essential oil to water and use it as a mist (shake first) or use an oil diffuser or vaporizer. By adding other essential oils, like lavender or peppermint, you can make your own fragrance.

Because of its high citral and geraniol content, Lemongrass essential oil can also repel bugs such as mosquitoes and ants. You can even use Lemongrass essential oil to kill fleas. BTW, both lavender and peppermint are also bug repellents!

If you have never tried Lemongrass essential oil before, you should! It's so versatile, I think you will come up with many uses for it. I for one, plan to try it as a doggie deodorizing mist (I might add some Vitamin E for the skin). They will smell good and repel fleas at the same time!
